The Importance of Political Satire

© Andrew Mason
Everyone's seen an example of political satire probably a hundred times over by now. It's most commonly found in news paper politic comic strips or even on certain TV shows and movies. Around an important election it can be found pretty much everywhere you look. Political satire is usually always good for a hearty laugh, but this sort of satire is far more functional and important that it may seem.
Satire is a simple mockery of a situation or ideology, but it is often used to convey a message and get its audience to think for a moment about the reality of said situation. This sort of satire can be very important, because the humor involved can draw an audience that would not necessarily pay any attention to the actual message were it not wrapped in the facade of entertainment. However, once they experience the satire and recognize the deeper meaning and resemblance to real issues they may begin to ponder it with a sudden sense of importance.
Political satire is a tool for getting points across to people who usually tend to not listen, and its a very important one.

Satire vs Parody

© TheAlieness GiselaGiardino²³Two words that people tend to get confused pretty often are satire and parody. Though, the difference between the two words is quite vague there is a difference.
Satire is a subtle way of mocking real world situations through simple words or even presenting an example of a situation without mimicking any actual events. Parody, on the other hand, does mimic actual events. Parody is a way of taking an actual person or occurrence and portraying them in an exaggerated manner that makes them funny. Though, both satire and parody are both intended to make people laugh satire does not depend on any real situation to take place.
Another important thing to note about satire is that it usually has a serious social or political message to convey. It can be used to bring things to light and make people think about real life situations while giving them a laugh at the same time. Parody, however, is simply used to make people laugh. There's no deeper meaning or hidden message; its just comedy.

Exaggeration Satire

© Charles Williams
Sometimes things are just funny because they're so true. When we stretch or exaggerate the truth it can become a whole lot more entertaining. It's like those silly characterture drawings where the people have big heads and totally over exaggerated features. When someone has a slightly larger than average nose the artist will often draw their noses much much larger than it actually is in proportion to the rest of their head. This is what makes the picture funny!
Exaggeration satire is funny because its taking a blatant truth and making it a much bigger deal than it actually is. Let's say, for example, that you took your dog for a walk and he urinated on a stranger. Maybe it was a drop or two that landed on his shoe. When you go to tell that story to your friends, wouldn't be much funnier if you exaggerated a bit? You could say that the dog wet all over the person until they were drenched in dog urine.
Now THAT'S funny!

Humor Satire in the Funny Papers

© cutup
Some things are just funny because they're true. That's what makes satire a great way to get a laugh. Using examples of real people and real places put into real situations with exaggerated results is almost always funny. Most of the comic strips you might find in your local News paper's funny pages are great examples of such comedic satire. From Blondie to Garfield, there's a situation in there that may have even happened to you before.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like if a mischievous army private pull pranks on his commanding officer? In real life it may not go over too well, but in Beetle Baily its always something funny to see.
Have you ever wondered what your cat is thinking about you after hearing you bomb a hundred phone calls to find a date? Well, Garfield seems to have a lot to say about such a situation.
Its these hilarious situations that we've found ourselves in before with an extra added spin of fiction to make it even funnier. I'm sure our cats think its funny, too!

Wall-E: A Family Satire Film

© A l'origine
Wall-E is a family film created in complete computer generated animation that features the most adorable robot the world will ever know. Wall-E spends his days all alone in a world literally flooded with garbage left behind by the ever consuming human race. He's a garbage robot who compacts the trash and stacks it up in massive sky scraper sized towers. He's organizing all this garbage to make room for humanity's return to Earth.
See, the people in Wall-E all live aboard a massive space ship where they are waited on hand and foot without a single responsibility to concern them. They are all incredibly obese - to the point of immobility - and ride around in large, luxurious hover chairs. This is a direct mockery of America's habit of constantly consuming with complete disregard for the future outcome and consequences of our actions. Can this be how it really turns out?
The movie ends on a high note, however, because when it finally comes down to relaxing or saving the world the people struggle to their feet to fight for their home.
